Worried fans quickly filled the comments of 'Clueless' star Alicia Silverstone's latest TikTok after she ate a bright orange berry that has been identified as Solanum pseudocapsicum, also known as a Jerusalem cherry. An expert tells EW the plant 'is mildly poisonous but a couple of fruits won't hurt'.
on Aug. 19. She then proceeds show a bright orange, half-eaten, cherry tomato-sized fruit and admits,"I just bit into this because it was on the street, and we were discussing whether it was a tomato. It's definitely not because look at these leaves."
Silverstone then points her camera toward the bush she plucked the berry from, which lay beyond an iron fence in the patio of a residential property. The comment section of Silverstone's TikTok quickly filled up with comments identifying the fruit as Solanum pseudocapsicum, commonly known as the Jerusalem cherry. Those who speculated what Silverstone ingested may have been a Jerusalem cherry expressed worry - the plant is poisonous.Rachel Meyer, an Associate Adjunct Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Santa Cruz, was able to positively identify the plant toas Solanum pseudocapsicum.
Professor Meyer added that, "The fruits and leaves are also medicinal and pretty amazing, chemically, and even are used for gastrointestinal issues." but warned that "people should NOT eat this plant or try using it medicinally without familiarizing themselves with the literature on traditional uses and toxicity levels.
Rather than tasting like a cherry tomato or like a berry, Silverstone commented, "It's almost like a pepper?" She ended her short TikTok by asking once more, "Does anyone know what this is? I don't know what it is, I need someone to tell me. I'm in England. Okay thank you!" She has not posted on any of her social media accounts since then.
