Review: Anna Kendrick plays a woman with a psychologically abusive boyfriend in director Mary Nighy’s 'Alice, Darling'
“Alice, Darling” has the form of a film but the effect of a long “Dear Abby” letter that might as well be titled “Do you think my boyfriend is toxic?” Yes, yes we do. No doubt about it. In the title role, Anna Kendrick plays a busy professional in Toronto living with a British-born painter, Simon .
From the opening minutes, in which she glumly excuses herself from a night out with friends in order to satisfy his request for a suggestive photo of her via text message, Alice exhibits a combination of fear and unease in every interaction with him. Exploring what’s going on in her mind is the business of the movie, which Ms. Kendrick has said depicts a relationship very similar to one she exited shortly before making it. Written by Alanna Francis, “Alice, Darling” marks the feature directorial debut of Mary Nighy, who is also a television director, actress and the daughter of actor Bill Nighy.
