Two of the four catchers competing for jobs, playing time homer early for Padres
Austin Nola’s first home run of the spring followed a lead-off single by Trent Grisham to begin the game against Dodgers’ left-hander Julio Urías. Nola, expected to start the bulk of the games at catcher this season, also walked and grounded out. He has reached base in four of his 11 plate appearances. … Jorge Alfaro led off the second inning by hitting his third homer of the spring. Alfaro, one of four catchers in camp, served as the designated hitter Friday.
Nick Martinez threw 26 pitches in his first Cactus League inning, one of them hit the other way and just beyond the left field wall by Freddie Freeman. The right-hander, who is trying to lock up the fifth spot in the rotation, did not allow another hit and walked two in three innings against a loaded Dodgers lineup. … Javy Guerra and Nabil Crismatt followed with a scoreless inning apiece before James Norwood surrendered a two-run homer by Will Smith.
