Wave FC's Alex Morgan plays during an NWSL Challenge Cup soccer match against Angel City, Saturday, April 2, 2022, in San Diego.
"What a ride it's been," Morgan told the crowd after the game."I want to thank my teammates who have constantly challenged me every day and made me better. I want to thank my family who have relentlessly supported me, sacrificed so much for me. I love you guys and all 95 you who are here tonight, and the fans. You push me to be my best self every day.
"As unexpected as this came, we are so overjoyed. To me, family means everything. I wouldn't be here without my husband and my family uplifting and motivating and encouraging and supporting me and sacrificing for me for the last 15 years as a professional athlete." "Alex's legacy is one that will endure for generations, not only in the records, awards and trophies she has earned, but in the countless lives she has touched along the way."
