Authorities have released the cause of death for the Montgomery Police Department’s chaplain, Antonio Seales.
The chase began that afternoon in Greenville, whose police chief said a man stole from a business then fled from officers on Interstate 65. It ended in Montgomery when the driver crashed into Seales’ vehicle on Norman Bridge Road near East Delano Avenue.
It is not clear if Seales was on duty at the time, but ALEA confirms he was not involved in the chase.ALEA, which is handling the investigation, identified the fleeing driver as Ashton Ford, 26, of Montgomery. Greenville police previously said he was charged with third-degree theft of property, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and attempting to elude. It is not yet clear if he will face charges for Seales’ death.
Greenville Police Chief Justin Lovvorn said ALEA has taken over all charges relating to the chase and any potential charges for the crash. Greenville will only retain jurisdiction for the theft charge. Seales had been with the Montgomery Police Department since 2013, becoming the police chaplain in 2021. One of his signature achievements was helping pioneer Operation Good Shepherd to provide support and encouragement for families of loved ones affected by violence.Copyright 2024 WSFA.
