According to ALDOT, one worker was killed while on the job in a work zone in Chilton County in 2020 and it happened again last year in Marion County.
ALDOT leaders emphasize construction zone safety) - It’s a grim statistic when it comes to construction zone fatalities. One national insurance study shows nearly 500 road workers, along with first responders, have been killed since 2020 in construction zones.
Ken Colvert is the Traffic Management Center director for the Alabama Department of Transportation . He says there is no mystery behind the collisions with road crews. “Distracted driving and speed is our biggest problem. If you’re driving through a work zone, you need to slow down, pay attention to the signs. If you see flashing lights, slow down, move over out of the way if you can,” said Colvert. According to ALDOT, one worker was killed while on the job in a work zone in Chilton County in 2020 and it happened again last year in Marion County. Here in Alabama, ALDOT has well over 100 construction zones across the state with a combined work force in the thousands, and many of them have families. Colvert believes that’s another part of the equation some drivers fail to consider when speeding through a work site. “We do campaigns every year with our public and media relations. Drive like you’re out there, drive like you’re working out there,” said Colvert. And speaking of campaigns, Colvert says the day may be coming in which ALDOT will expand and broaden its safety program to include the drivers themselves. “I see the day coming where we would need to address the drivers. That’s a heavy lift for anyone for the amount of drivers on the roadways. Driver education is an important part, simply how to approach a work zone or an incident scene,” said Colvert. Colvert says a number of work zone employees suffer injuries every year in Alabama. Some are minor, others are serious. It’s a real issue when it comes to working in the work zones in Alabama and across the country.
