BREAKING NEWS: Ald. Howard Brookins (21st) announces he will retire at the end of his term in 2023, making 14 members of the Chicago City Council to either resign mid-term or announce they won't run for re-election. And more could be on the way out.

Ald. Howard Brookins Jr. on Wednesday announced he will retire at the end of his term, joining a still-growing exodus from the Chicago City Council.

Brookins touted a number of accomplishments while in office, including the ward's first Starbucks, the launch of the city's electric scooter program, and the establishment of a reparations fund for victims of notorious former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge, whose crew of detectives tortured suspects into false murder confessions in the 1970s and 1980s.

Ald. George Cardenas likely will exit before the end of the year if, as expected, he is elected to serve on the Cook County Board of Review.
