Anthony Albanese has admitted a referendum for the Voice to Parliament has underlying risks based on Australia’s poor history of public votes on constitutional reforms but says he will “respect the outcome” regardless of its success or failure.

The Prime Minister spoke to Sky News Australia on day two of the ongoing Labor National Conference in Brisbane, taking the opportunity to reiterate his stance on the Voice amid mounting calls from the No campaign for the referendum to be called off.

“This is in the hands of the Australian people. I will do my best to promote a Yes vote. I was fully aware, when I said I would hold a referendum there were people who said ‘oh, that will be a risk’. But the Prime Minister said while the challenges faced were significant, he would not withdraw the campaign as the movement for reconciliation with Indigenous peoples was long overdue and ultimately the decision lay in the hands of the Australian public.what responsibility he takes if Referendum fails. Makes case for Voice but there's caution here re outcome.

Ms Jayes also asked the Prime Minister if there would be any likelihood of further reconciliation measures following a referendum failure, but Mr Albanese shut down these prospects.
