Peter Dutton has unleashed on the Albanese government’s meagre assistance package for Ukraine demanding the Prime Minister “get on with it” and meet Kyiv’s demands.

Kyiv has been crying out for months for more heavy armoured vehicles and specifically Australian Hawkeis, but after extended negotiations the Australian government refused to meet those demands.

“They need additional support from the government and this has taken too long and is too little, in terms of what has been provided,” Mr Dutton said in Perth on Monday. “Frankly, they should get on with it and provide that support because if they don't, lives will be lost. I hope that they can do that as quickly as possible.”

Strategic policy expert Michael Shoebridge also hit out at the latest package and said it failed to “meet the lowest expectations” for support. Shadow foreign minister Simon Birmingham said the new government had moved “slower” in providing assistance than its predecessor.
