Plans by Moscow to build a new embassy within several hundred metres of Parliament House have been terminated on national security grounds.
Australia will axe Russia’s lease on land for a new embassy in Canberra on national security grounds because the proposed building is too close to Parliament House.
“The government has received very clear security advice as to the risk presented by a new Russian presence so close to Parliament House,” Mr Albanese.“We are acting quickly to ensure the lease site does not become a formal diplomatic presence.” Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, the National Capital Authority – which governs land use within Canberra –Russian government challenged the decision in the Federal Court
