Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Vietnamese workers can help fill skills shortages, as he declared his desire to elevate Vietnam as one of Australia’s top-tier partners.
Mr Albanese wrapped up a well-received state visit to Hanoi on Sunday, which included meetings with the Communist country’s four top leaders.While Mr Albanese laid a wreath at the tomb of Vietnam’s revolutionary founder Ho Chi Minh, whose embalmed body is on display, he would not be drawn on whether Australia’s involvement alongside the US in the Vietnam War was a mistake.
Business Council of Australia chief and Western Sydney University Chancellor Jennifer Westacott agreed it was time for Australia to allow Vietnamese workers to fill skills shortages.“We do need to find a way to tap into the very high-skilled labour that is here. Very highly educated people, English taught basically in schools and people really wanting that working experience in Australian companies,” she said.
