More than half of Australians will likely vote No to a Voice to Parliament if it were held today, according to a new poll, as the campaign from both sides ramps up this week.

The survey, conducted by Newspoll for The Australian newspaper, showed 53 per cent were opposed to the independent and permanent body that would advise the government on issues and policies that may impact First Nations Australians.

The news worsened for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, with Labor's primary vote falling behind the Coalition for the first time since he won the 2022 election. Mr Albanese is also copping it from the public, with his satisfaction levels dipping into the negatives for the first time since July 2022.Both sides of the Voice will being their first full week of campaigning, with less than six weeks until Australians head to the polls to make their decision.

"I can only hope that now it might help, in some small way, to change the lives of our First Nations People for the better," he said.
