The proposed merger between Kroger and Albertsons grocery chains is starting to take shape, and Alaskan consumers are wondering what will happen next.
Published: Jul. 10, 2024 at 5:05 PM AKDTANCHORAGE, Alaska - The proposed merger worth billions of dollars between Kroger and Albertsons grocery chains is starting to take shape.that will be divested in the acquisition.
The proposed merger would give C&S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire-based grocery company that owns the Piggly Wiggly franchise, ownership of the 18 Alaska stores listed in the divestiture plan.Anchorage resident Michelle Klouda said her major concern is if it could lead to a loss of jobs. The planned merger — reported to be worth $24.6 billion — has been previously opposed by Alaska’s delegation, with Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Mary Peltola voicing their concerns about grocery prices and store accessibility. Expressing her continued concerns in an email, Sen. Lisa Murkowski questioned the effects that the potential new owners of Carrs-Safeway stores would have. “C&S Wholesale Grocers are untested and untried in Alaska, and have no experience working with local labor unions,” Murkowski wrote. “My efforts to protect Alaskans from the negative consequences of this merger are far from over.” Longtime Alaska Economic and Development Corporation president Bill Popp said there are a lot of unknowns surrounding the merger, and doubts it would lead to immediate store closures. “I don’t know that they would be closing a store within six months of having purchased it,” Popp said. “They’re spending good money, they’re spending $3 billion on acquisitions of over 500 stores across the country ... these are not insignificant purchases by this company. The merger between the two grocery chains was announced in October 2022, withthat no stores would be closed and “all frontline associates will remain employed. The companies said a merger would help them better compete with big retailers like Walmart, Costco, and Amazon, which owns Whole Foods. They would have more power to negotiate prices and could save on distribution and administrative costs.
