ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Crowds marched through downtown Anchorage, some smiling, some shouting - all demanding the Trump administration cease its “executive overreach.”, which called for all 50 states to join in peaceful demonstrations April 5.
Local organizers invited Alaskans to join in standing up against the administration. Protestors held a vast assortment of signs addressing their fears of Medicare, Medicaid and social security cutoffs, abortion access, veteran services, federal layoffs, unlawful deportation, LGBTQ+ rights, personal data violations, failing democracy, economic strife, and lack of environmental protections - to name some. Organizers said there were at least 16 protests across the state on Saturday, in Homer, Wasilla, Anchorage, Juneau, Sitka, Glennallen, Fairbanks, Gustavus, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Healy, Soldotna, Cordova, Skagway, Bethel, and Dillingham. Many in Anchorage chanted “Dump Trump” in their march from Town Square Park to the offices of federal representative Nick Begich and Senator Lisa Murkowski. One man, who declined to give his name for fear of retaliation, said he came to join the protest because he fears for his job as a federal employee. Another woman in attendance said as someone with a disability she’s unhappy about the rollbacks on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion measures. “We need equality. We absolutely need equality for this whole country and to unite one another,” the woman said. “We really need to let the people know that it is wrong; what the Trump administration is doing to our democracy.”$3,892 PFD advances as part of House committee’s deficit-laden budget draftAlaska Housing Voucher waitlist opens for the first time since 2023
