Two Alaskan skiers, Luke Jager and Kendall Kramer, secured podium finishes on the opening day of the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships.

A pair of Alaska n standouts captured podium finishes on the opening day of the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships at Kincaid Park in Anchorage. In the men’s race to start the day, Luke Jager finished the 10K course in 21 minutes, 39.4 seconds to finish exactly 16 seconds behind race winner John Steel Hagenbuch of Dartmouth University. Jager actually finished fourth overall but because runner-up Andreas Kirkeng of Norway is not eligible to compete for U.S.

titles, Jager was credited with the bronze, beating out Australian skier Hugo Hinckfuss in a photo finish. Jager is a West Anchorage High School graduate and currently competes for Alaska Pacific University, a powerhouse program in the state. In Thursday’s women’s race, Fairbanks' Kendall Kramer finished second, finishing 11.2 seconds behind race winner Kate Oldham of Montana State University. Kramer finished the 10K race in 24:41.0. Kramer is a West Valley High School graduate and currently races for the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The championships continue Saturday with the classic sprint races, Sunday with the 20K classic mass start races, and Tuesday with the freestyle (or skate style) sprints
