Alaska is experiencing clearer and colder conditions with the exception of the Aleutians, which are still seeing active weather. Light snow is expected in Southeast Alaska, while most of Mainland Alaska will remain dry. Southcentral will see a mix of sun and clouds with warmer temperatures near the coast. Avalanche danger remains high in higher elevations.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Clearer and colder conditions remain with much of the state this morning, while active weather will stick around for the Aleutians. Localized areas of light snow are expected for parts of the Southeast into the evening, with most of Mainland Alaska staying on the drier side.Skies are slowly clearing across Southcentral this morning, with a mix of sun and clouds expected today.
While many areas inland will see highs near or slightly above average, it will be even warmer near the coast. Despite the dry weather for much of Southcentral, we will see some pockets of wintry mix near coastal regions of the Kenai. While the mix will be light in nature, little to no accumulation is likely. A reminder that with the warm weather we have been seeing, avalanche danger is with us. Today we’ll see areas above 2500 remain considerable, with the main threat being wind slab and glide avalanches. Winds in the higher elevations could gust as high as 40 mph, which will lead to an increase in wind slab avalanches. We’ll stay on the dry and sunny side the next few days, with warmer weather arriving into Christmas Weekend. Right now, highs look to top out in the low to mid-30s. With increasing moisture, it’s possible that not only could we see light snow but some areas of rain mixed in with it. This upcoming weekend will need to be watched, as even the smallest impacts will cause issues.Another day with more sun and chilly conditions for the Southeast can be expected today. The only exception will be far southern reaches of the panhandle, where a winter weather advisory will go into effect this evening. The winter weather advisory is for Eastern Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan and Annette Island. Snow of three to seven inches looks possible through the night, although a more southern track of the storm will eat into any snowfall chances. We’ll see the next few days remaining fairly quiet, however rain and areas of snow return back to Southeast by weeks en
