A Thursday alert from the department says trucks will be weighed at Tok and Fox prior to crossing the Richardson Highway’s flood control bridges at milepost 346, and unpermitted loads will be stopped if their weight exceeds 80 tons, or 160,000 pounds.

load posting a pair of bridges on the Richardson Highway as data suggests a mining venture’s trucking contractor has been exceeding stated weight limits.

Perreault said overweight trucks without special permitting must now either reroute or unload until their weight drops below the posted maximum for crossing the bridges. The route involves 24/7 transportation between the mine and processing facility via 95-foot B-Train trucks driven by contractor Black Gold Transport across about 240 miles of public highways, amounting to 60 trips per day, according to the companies.

“There was no contract,” he said, because the state had determined no special permitting was required. Those statistics don’t directly translate to the number of individual trucks, as one vehicle could be weighed more than once along the corridor. However, after a Newscenter Fairbanks analysis of the license plates and weigh station locations for the loads over 82.5 tons, it appeared that 32 of the 34 hits were discrete.

ASAH also called for AKDOT to release the final corridor action plan, the draft of which was put out inby state contractor Kinney Engineering. The draft contained analyses that suggested AKDOT will need to increase its annual $1.9 million maintenance and operating costs along the corridor by between 140% and 220% to adjust for the haul’s loads while also expending $3.2 million in capital costs for snow removal.
