Published: Jul. 3, 2024 at 1:57 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - Alaska State Troopers will be conducting high-visibility patrols on Alaska’s highways this Independence Day weekend.

Troopers will be on the look out for not only impaired drivers but also aggressive driving, distracted driving, speeding and those not wearing a seatbelt. AST’s theme this year for the holiday enforcement is “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.” The troopers will be increasing patrols from July 3 to July 7.

“Independence Day is a time to celebrate our nation, with many Alaskans taking to the roads and highways,” said Colonel Maurice Hughes, Director of Alaska State Troopers. “If you sense any level of buzz, it is your duty to stay away from the driver’s seat. For some people, even one drink is too many to drive safely. Individuals typically make arrangements with friends and family for their Fourth of July festivities, including deciding on the food and beverages that will be served. It’s crucial to plan for a sober ride home and completely rule out drinking and driving,” Hughes added.
