Alaska State Parks are participating in a nationwide initiative called First Day Hikes, encouraging people to start the new year outdoors. Various hikes will be offered across the state.
Alaska State Parks are hosting several events on New Year’s Day to kick off the new year while supporting conservation, health, and outdoor exploration . First Day Hikes is part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors. On New Year’s Day, hundreds of free, guided hikes will be organized in all 50 states.
These events are part of a nationwide effort encouraging people to begin the year outdoors and embrace the mental and physical benefits of nature. From scenic hikes to invigorating activities like the Polar Bear Plunge, Alaska State Parks offers opportunities for every adventurer, wrote Wendy Sailors, the Community Engagement Manager for the Department of Natural Resources, in a press release. There will be three events taking place throughout Alaska. Those three will be in Chugach State Park, Delta Junction, and Ketchikan. Chugach State Park will do a First Day Hike on the Eydlu-Bena Loop Trail at Eklutna. The trail is 2.2 miles long and will be led by park staff. Meet park rangers at the Eklutna Day Use Area at 11 a.m. The hike is expected to finish around 3 p.m., and coffee and donuts will be provided to those who finish. Micro-spikes are recommended due to icy conditions as well as sturdy footwear, water, warm clothing, and snowshoes if needed. The Delta Junction Trails Association will start the new year with its 13th annual First Day Hike. The hike will take place at River Walk Park, off Mile Post 267 Richardson Highway, starting at noon. The hike will be family and pet-friendly. This hike will have three options for those who want to go out: hike, ski, or snowshoe. This year’s event will feature a new StoryWalk from the Delta Community Library. It is recommended you bring snacks and drinks, as well as your own equipment, if you plan to ski or snowsho
