Alaska's wildfire season is ramping up after a slow start.
Alaska’s wildfire season is here after a slow startANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska’s usual wildfire season got off to a slow start but is now ramping up, according to Information Officer Sam Harrel with the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The largest fire is the McDonald Fire which is burning south of Fairbanks and has grown to just over 50,000 acres. Harrel said 83 firefighters are working to protect a series of cabins in the Five Mile Creek area near the fire’s perimeter, but the majority of the fire is on military training lands that land managers have elected to allow to burn.
But while those fires may be some of the largest in the state, officials have concerns about a much smaller fire — the Susitna Fire is only about an acre in size, but is not yet quite contained. Hot Shot crews from out of state have started arriving in Fairbanks to help. Harrel said by Wednesday about 120 outside crew members should be ready to deploy.
