Alaska's healthcare industry is grappling with a severe shortage of workers, requiring over 9,400 new employees annually to meet growing demand. Despite numerous job openings, the state struggles to fill these roles. The report highlights the need for registered nurses, with a significant gap between the number of trained nurses and the state's requirements. Additionally, the report emphasizes the increasing need for long-term and in-home care services as Alaska's population ages.

Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage is seen on Sunday. Hospitals provide core health care services, but as Alaska 's population continues to age, long-term and in-home care will become increasingly important, said Jared Kosin, executive director of the Alaska Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Kosin, who presented the information to the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, characterized the workforce situation as a good news-bad news story. For now, the supply of new nurses and other health care workers is not close to meeting that demand, especially for those educated and trained in Alaska, according to the workforce report.
