In December, the federal government gave Alaska’s Department of Education and Early Development 30 days to demonstrate that they were making efforts to solve the discrepancy.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Education funding for the State of Alaska has hit another roadblock, as the U.S. Department of Education has designated Alaska as a “high-risk” grantee.

According to a press release from the state’s Senate Majority, the reason for this designation is that Alaska allegedly failed to fund four school districts at the same levels as previously in 2021 and 2022, while at the same time utilizing American Rescue Plan Act funds. Doing so, according to ED, violated what are known as “maintenance equity requirements”, a condition of receiving the ARPA funding.

This lessening of funding, said the Senate Majority, came as a result of lower enrollment numbers in the four districts, which include the Fairbanks North Star Borough. In December, the federal government gave Alaska’s Department of Education and Early Development 30 days to demonstrate that they were making efforts to solve the discrepancy.DEED assured lawmakers that they were working with ED to resolve the issue. The Senate Education Committee has scheduled an emergency hearing for 3:30 PM on Wednesday, April 3.That, according to the press release, must be done by 30 days from March 27, a deadline imposed by ED.
