Alaska experienced its largest quakes of the year in December 2024, with two magnitude 6.3 earthquakes striking the Aleutian Chain. The Alaska Earthquake Center reports that these events highlight the state's ongoing seismic activity and the importance of its expanding network of seismic monitoring stations.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska experienced two magnitude 6.3 earthquakes in 2024, marking the state's largest seismic events of the year, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center. Heather McFarlin, Seismic Data Manager at the Alaska Earthquake Center, who authored the center's report summarizing Alaska 's 2024 seismicity, revealed that these two 6.3 quakes occurred along the extensive Aleutian Chain, south of Adak Island, just one day apart on December 8th and 9th. A magnitude 6.

1 earthquake followed approximately 20 minutes after the December 9th tremor.Alaska typically registers a few magnitude 6.0 earthquakes annually, with a magnitude 7.0 event anticipated roughly every few years, McFarlin explained. She emphasized the state's widespread seismic activity, highlighting the significance of a comprehensive network of seismic stations for monitoring. McFarlin noted that since the addition of new seismic stations between 2019 and 2021, Alaska now boasts a significantly larger footprint for seismic monitoring. This expansion has facilitated a deeper understanding of seismicity in previously unmonitored regions. The Alaska Earthquake Center report indicated approximately 40,000 seismic events in 2024. This figure encompasses earthquakes as well as ground movements caused by volcanoes and glaciers. McFarlin estimated that non-earthquake events constituted less than 5% of the seismic occurrences processed by the Alaska Earthquake Center last year
