TALLAHASSEE — Alaska students are attending class with teachers nearly 5,000 miles away in Florida through a $525,000 deal brokered with the help of former Sunshine State Gov. Jeb Bush.
But while the move was praised by education leaders in both states, it came as a shock to Alaska teachers, who question the need and the worth of the out-of-state education platform encroaching on their turf. Under the contract, Florida educators will lead the first wave of online courses, teaching students in Alaska through June 30. As of last week, Alaska Virtual School enrolled 151 students from seven school districts, according to the state department of education.
