Alaska is facing an unusually warm January with temperatures exceeding average for many regions. While coastal areas are seeing rain and snow, inland areas are experiencing mostly clear skies. However, heavy snowfall is predicted for Western Alaska and Turnagain Pass, prompting a winter weather advisory. Despite the warmth, some areas are expecting a return to colder temperatures later in the week.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - January is on track to close just outside the top five warmest on record for Anchorage, with Fairbanks currently sitting outside the top ten warmest. This stretch of warm weather has been gripping the state since December, with little in the way of cold weather expected this week. While that has been the case as of late, many areas across the state have begun to see some much-needed snowfall. The heaviest snow today will fall for Western Alaska and through Turnagain Pass.

Outside of the rain/snow mix today, expect some breezy conditions for Southcentral. We’ll see 20 to 40 mph winds today, with little in the way of cold weather expected this week. Daily rain and snow remain with us, with temperatures set to warm into the upper 30s and lower 40s by week’s end.A dense fog advisory is in effect for parts of the Southeast this morning, where fog has formed through the night. Be prepared for visibility down to less than one-quarter of a mile at times.

More rain and snow is expected through the rest of the week, with daily highs near 40 and overnight lows sitting in the mid-30s.A wind advisory remains in effect for the Alaska Range today, where gusts up to 60 mph will be possible. These warming winds will keep temperatures well above average through the Interior, where January is shaping up to potentially be one of the warmest since 2016. While we do stay on the drier side today, blowing snow can be expected in areas near the Alaska Range.

Some areas of light snow return to the region Thursday into Friday, with the likelihood we could see pockets of wintry mix.
