Following a fatal plane crash, residents in rural Alaska communities like Golovin and Savoonga gathered to welcome back Bering Air flights. The airline is a crucial lifeline for these remote areas, providing the only air travel service to connect residents with the rest of the state. Locals expressed their unwavering support for Bering Air and emphasized the importance of the service.

Golovin resident Irene Navarro joined others on Saturday in welcoming the first Bering Air flight into the village since the crash.

For many rural communities in the region, Navarro said Bering Air is the only flight service that connects residents to the rest of the state. “We wanted to let Bering Air know that we’re supporting them through this healing process,” Navarro said. “We just want Bering Air to know that we’re 100% behind them and that we’re going to continue to fly with them.”

Bering Air services 32 rural communities across Northwest Alaska, providing both passenger and cargo transportation, according to the company’s website.Tanisha Slwooko joined friends and family in welcoming two Bering Air flights into Savoonga over the weekend. She says the crash has been felt in communities across the region.
