A Sterling businessman was charged with wire fraud concerning Covid-19 relief funds.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Kent Tompkins, owner of J & B Construction, allegedly received $95,000 in relief funds and attempted to receive $276,500 more, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office District of Alaska .
Tompkins falsified his criminal history on Economic Injury Disaster Loan applications. He applied for two EIDL loans, one in May of 2020 and the other in November of 2021. Previously, in 2018, Tompkins was indicted on several felony grand theft charges in South Dakota and was convicted in August 2020. So, he submitted both EIDL applications after he was convicted in South Dakota. Therefore, he provided false information about his prior conviction and probation.
On April 17, Tompkins made his first appearance in court. The U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska returned his indictment of wire fraud in violation of 18 U.S.C. §1343. There are several organizations within the state, including the FBI Anchorage Field Office, who are further investigating the case.
