A pedestrian overcrossing bridge in Anchorage, Alaska collapsed due to high winds, causing the Seward Highway to be closed. The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has launched a rebuilding process, with Chief Bridge Engineer Leslie Daugherty overseeing the effort. While the remaining structure is deemed safe, engineers are reviewing old drawings, making calculations for new construction, and investigating what caused the bridge's decking to be vulnerable to the wind. DOT&PF is also inspecting similar bridges across the state as a precautionary measure. Schools in the area were closed on Monday due to the storm, but reopened on Tuesday with a new bus route solution for students who relied on the collapsed bridge.

DOT&PF’s Chief Bridge Engineer Leslie Daugherty is a big part of that rebuilding process. She said design teams have already begun to meet in discussion on how to move forward with those repairs and the remaining structure has been deemed entirely safe. While there are no DOT-owned pedestrian bridges, Daugherty said those overcrossings above roads are DOT’s responsibility to oversee. This makes DOT responsible for inspections and upkeep of those particular bridges.
Schools were open on Tuesday after the Anchorage School District closed schools on Monday due to storm-related impacts from over the weekend.
