The historically dubious AI-generated images of San Antonio during “Wild West times” surprised some Reddit users.
On Thursday, Reddit user u/Adampohh posted two pictures of what they said the AI chatbotcame up with when asked to describe what San Antonio might have looked like during the Wild West period — the early 1800s to 1900s.
The AI bot produced two images. One depicts a very young girl in a large brimmed hat and ornate dress standing solemnly in front of what appears to be the Alamo. The second image shows another young girl with a cowboy hat and bandana standing in front of the Alamo with a horse in the background. Both of the girls in the images are white. Reddit users commenting on the post pointed out that a more historically accurate depiction would have featured people of Latina heritage in the images.
San Antonio has a decisively Mexican history, particularly during the Wild West time period. The Battle of the Alamo, of course, took place in 1836, ending in a Mexican armed forces victory. Midjourney is an AI platform that takes text prompts and turns them into images. The user interacts with the platform via a Discord server. Midjourney describes itself on its website as “an independent research lab exploring new mediums of thought and expanding the imaginative powers of the human species.”
