The Texas General Land Office has rescheduled the extensive work for September or October.
Repair of the 1930s Cenotaph monument at the Alamo has been rescheduled until after the summer tourist season. The work had been set to start this month but is now planned for September or October. Ownership of the monument recently changed through a title transfer from the city to the state, which has funds in place for the repairs.
With the title transfer, “the General Land Office now has complete control of the Cenotaph,” Buckingham announced in May. “Ensuring this precious piece of Texas history is preserved and remains standing tall in its place has been my steadfast promise to all Texans.” Seven stones weighing up to 7,000 pounds have been removed at the top of the monument so engineers can study its interior, replaced with a temporary, artificial “cap” to protect it until repairs begin.
