Donovann Sanders, 19, was charged with murdering Kalilah Winford, also 19, in the July 31 shooting.
OAKLAND — A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murdering a 19-year-old woman who was shot July 31 inside of her bedroom window, and police say the two were heard arguing on a phone call shortly before it all happened.
Donovann Sanders, of Tracy, was charged Monday with murdering Kalilah Winford, of Alameda, as well as shooting into an occupied apartment on the 1800 block of Everett Street in Alameda, court records show. Winford was arrested Aug. 4, in Tracy, two days after Winford succumbed to her gunshot wound at a Bay Area hospital.
Police have not disclosed a specific motive, but say Winford’s mother heard her daughter and Sanders arguing over the phone earlier in the evening, and that her mother recognized his voice because she’s known him for years. At around 9 p.m., Winford was shot in the head inside her bedroom at the Everett Street apartment. Paramedics took Winford to a hospital, where she died two days later.
Sanders was identified as a suspect through cellphone GPS records, surveillance video, and because he allegedly used his stepfather’s gray Chevrolet Equinox during the killing, according to police. Authorities say the Equinox was seen a short distance from Winford’s home before the shooting, and that Sanders’ cellphone records prove that he spoke with her within minutes of the shooting. Sanders also allegedly called Winford’s number several times after the shooting.
