Medicare open enrollment is happening now, meaning more than 67 million people can look into their coverage options, and experts warn scammers may try to take advantage.

People could get a phone call, text, email, or even have someone show up at their door asking for personal information, according to AARP.AARP said all kinds of scams spread this time of year, and they often involve free gifts or unrealistic deals.The criminals are after people’s Social Security number, banking information, and Medicare number.

WBRC asked how a Medicare number can be used to exploit people, and an AARP Alabama spokesperson said scammers can commit Medicare fraud, setting up fake companies to make a profit. “This happens a lot,” said Jamie Harding. “We’ve heard from folks who keep getting sent, for instance, boxes of COVID tests that they never ordered or other medical devices that they never ordered that are being sent to them, billed to their Medicare, because somebody got a hold of their Medicare number and they’re making money off of this.
