Sara Baker faces serious criminal charges after allegedly attempting to murder her husband, James Doyle Baker, using fentanyl. The incidents reportedly occurred after Mr. Baker suffered a stroke.
According to court records, on June 19, Baker returned to her husband's residence with a black bag believed to contain a bottle of the drug and instructed a caregiver to place it in a safe located in the garage. The caregiver grew suspicious of the package and alerted law enforcement. Police obtained a search warrant and discovered a medicine bottle filled with a purple substance.
Cullman police testing confirmed the substance was fentanyl, as testified by lead investigator Zachary Latham in court. Following this new alleged offense, Baker was located at a home in Mountain Brook, Alabama, on July 11. She was subsequently booked into a jail outside of Cullman County after Circuit Judge Gregory Williams denied her release on bond, stating that Baker committed a new criminal offense by transporting and storing a large amount of fentanyl at the victim's residences.
The judge ruled that her continued release posed a risk to public safety and that no set of conditions could reasonably assure compliance with court orders regarding her bond. This decision revoked the bond that had been set at $400,000 after her initial arrest in November for the alleged poisoning attempts.
Baker's initial arrest on November 25 stemmed from allegations that she put the deadly synthetic opioid in Doyle Baker's food and drinks over several days between September 4 and September 20, 2025. She was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, distribution of a controlled substance, second-degree elder abuse, second-degree domestic violence, and four counts of solicitation to commit a controlled substance crime. Notably, Baker had previously worked in the Cullman County District Attorney's Office.
She was released from jail on the nearly half-a-million-dollar bond under the condition that she have no contact with her husband. However, reports indicate she continued to make stops at the house to pay caregivers and intervene in her husband's medical care, potentially violating the terms of her release. During a hearing, Doyle Baker testified that his wife had followed her bond conditions and had no contact with him after her first arrest, expressing confusion about the proceedings.
The case also involves a witness from Baker's first arrest who was a previous client of hers when she was a prosecutor; that client had been indicted for swallowing fentanyl in an attempt to destroy evidence. Further complicating the background, Baker's social media activity included posts railing against Republicans, and one repost alleged spiking his granddaughters' Dairy Queen with cocaine less than a month before her alleged drug-filled attempts on her husband.
Judge Williams' order to revoke bond underscores the severity with which the court views the repeated nature of the alleged crimes and the potential danger to the victim and public. The prosecution's case appears to be building on both the initial poisoning attempts and the subsequent discovery of fentanyl at the residence, suggesting a pattern of behavior. The involvement of a caregiver as a whistleblower and the forensic confirmation of fentanyl provide strong evidentiary elements.
Baker's prior role in the DA's office adds a layer of public trust betrayal, while the separate incident involving a former client destroying evidence with fentanyl introduces a possible pattern of involvement with the drug in illicit contexts. The revocation hearing resulted in Baker being taken back into custody, and she now faces the full weight of the original charges combined with the new allegation of possessing a controlled substance at the victim's home, likely leading to additional charges.
