Trump weighed in as Republicans compete for the seat being vacated as Sen. Tommy Tuberville runs for governor.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall at the U.S. Supreme Court on October 4, 2022 in Washington, D.C. the president’s endorsement of one of Marshall’s top opponents - Congressman Barry Moore . “Alabama - you know me by now.

I don’t back down, and I most certainly don’t back up,” Marshall said in a statement Sunday. “Bold, conservative change isn’t easy. But as your Attorney General, I never sat back and I never played it safe. That isn’t who you are, that isn’t who I am, and that isn’t what you elected me to do.” Marshall, Moore, and three other candidates are running for the Republican nomination to succeed Sen. Tommy Tuberville as he runs for governor rather than a second term in the U.S. Senate. In a social media post Saturday night, the president said Moore had his “Complete and Total Endorsement.” Trump’s stamp of approval is important in Alabama, a Republican stronghold where most GOP candidates pledge loyalty to the president.Marshall has also consistently supported Trump during his almost nine years as attorney general, often joining with other Republican AGs to advocate for the president’s policies in court while opposing policies from President Biden’s administration. “As your Attorney General, I’ve supported President Trump and his agenda and always put the people of Alabama First,” Marshall said.“And, after the stolen 2020 election, I took on the Biden Administration every chance I got, and won,” Marshall said. “If you want to know what kind of Senator I’ll be, just look at my record as Attorney General. Time and again, I was urged to back off from our conservative values and to pursue common ground when it comes to the left’s radicalMarshall also talked about his work as AG that he said would hold drug manufacturers accountable for their part in the opioid addiction crisis. “That fight wasn’t easy, but because we didn’t back down, Alabama secured over $750 million that’s going directly into our communities for addiction treatment, prevention and recovery,” Marshall said.“I’m still that same man today. And you can count on me to take those same conservative values to D.C. and keep working alongside President Trump, this time as your United States Senator.”the first Republican to enter the race last year, is a former U.S. Navy SEAL who ran for Jefferson County sheriff in 2022.Mike Cason has covered politics and state government for AL.com since 2013.
