The 2023-24 school season may be drawing to a close, but the time to read a good book (or two) is heating up for students across Alabama!

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The 2023-24 school season may be drawing to a close, but the time to read a good book is heating up for students across Alabama ! On Tuesday, Gov. Kay Ivey invited students to join her Summer Reading Challenge , which runs from May 21 - July 31.Our students worked hard in the classroom this school year, and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts,” Ivey said. “Summer is a time to break from school but not from learning.

The challenge is open to Alabama students from kindergarten through 8th grade in the upcoming 2024-25 year. It doesn’t matter if those students are in public, private, or home school. All three groups are encouraged to take part! “Last year, many joined me for my inaugural Summer Reading Challenge, and I was inspired by the enthusiasm our students brought as they embarked on their reading adventures,” Ivey said. “I look forward to hearing from each and every one of our students about their summer literary adventure.”

To take part in the challenge, grade-eligible students may write a letter to Gov. Ivey, sharing what their preferred summer reading book was and why it was their favorite, whether it be assigned summer reading novels or books of choice. Along with the written portion of the letter, students must include their name, grade they are entering and school they attend.
