The Alabama State Board of Education discussed options to increase the cut score for the reading portion of the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program . According to the Literacy Act, third graders must demonstrate sufficient reading skills to be promoted to fourth grade.The current cur score is 435, which is two standard errors of measurement below 473. 473 is the recommended score for students to be on grade level. Dr.
"We changed the test after 2021. In 2021 and 2022 we did the same test based on the old standards. In 2023 and 2024 we changed the test. This is clarification, the cut score in all four of those years has been minus two but the raw number was different than 21 and 22 because we recalculated all that. So, everything changed on the test," said Mackey.The first changed the score to 444 for Spring 2025 testing. 444 is 1.5 standard errors of measurement below 473.
In Spring 2024, 91% of 3rd-grade students met the requirement. Combining the 2024 summer and spring test scores, 93.5% of 2023-2024 third-grade students, which is 50,021 students, met the requirement, while 6.5%, or 3,471 students, did not. In August, preliminary self-reported data from school districts showed 1,832 3rd-grade students were retained due to reading."I think most people want to move up. Maybe everyone wants to move up over time.
"What I would hope is that even if we went to 13.65%, at the end of summer it would still be about 6.5% because those students did score higher. They would have a higher pass rate on the summer test because they have more students taking it with the assumption that they are a little better readers than students who scored below 435. We would have a better chance of doing well on that test. Our overall retention might not actually go up even if we go to 1.5.
