) - Alabama State Senator April Weaver filed a bill that would create a new crime. The legislation would criminalize “interference with a first responder.” This would occur when a person is within 25 feet of a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency services personnel after being told to vacate a place where responders are operating.
The legislation states that to be charged, one must impede or interfere with responder duties, threaten a responder with physical harm, or make physical contact with a first responder. The crime would result in a Class A misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $6,000. The legislation is meant to allow first responders to carry out their responsibilities without having to worry about agitators or interference by individuals. Senator Weaver stated that “interference with a first responder” would not apply to obstruction, impairment, or hindrance of making an arrest, because it is already addressed in the Alabama Code.Tuesday morning crash cleared on I-85 NB in MontgomeryNew bill could bring penalties to Alabama restaurants for failing to label seafood
