U.S. Sen. Katie Britt says she counts some Democratic colleagues among her best friends in the Senate and says such cross-party relationships are essential to governing. But she says it's become increasingly difficult amid a widening political divide fueled by social media.

“How do we get back to that in this country, where you don’t actually have to agree with someone to show them respect?” she said. “In today’s society it is increasingly hard to have an open and honest dialogue with somebody else that maybe doesn’t share your viewpoint. I think it’s a disservice, both to our people as a nation and to the progress that we can make.”
“They showed that you do not have to agree with someone to show them respect,” Britt said, adding that social media has accelerated the divide, turning some people into more of a “show horse than a workhorse.” : She used a harrowing account of a young woman’s sexual abuse to attack Biden’s border policies, but the rapes did not happen in the U.S. or during the Biden administration.
