A new report from Feeding America estimates more than 884,000 people in Alabama, or 17.4% of the population, is dealing with food insecurity.

The USDA defines food insecurity as “the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.” The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama distributes between 1.5-1.7 million pounds of food each month to more than 350 community partners, which disperse that food into their neighborhoods.
