“There are a lot of people that are still teaching basically children to guess words, instead of sounding them out,” said Terri Collins, a supporter of the legislation. “We would like to ban that, and hopefully that would help ban it in our colleges of education that maybe be still teaching that a little bit and then letting it get in the classroom.”Alabama has invested millions of dollars in the last decade to update early reading instruction, with good results. Over time, students will recognize the word and identify it without conscious effort. Look for homework that prompts students to “think what kind of word would fit;” that is a cueing technique that should not be used anymore. Students should not guess.
