The Alabama Public Library Service Board voted to remove certain books from children's and teens' sections, sparking debate among board members. The decision, aimed at parental control over reading material, is not slated to take effect until 2026.
) - The Alabama Public Library Service Board approved a rules change Thursday afternoon, which will remove some books from library children’s and teens’ sections. The Alabama Public Library Service Board was split in their decision, with board members who voted for it saying that it was a necessary step towards protecting Alabama children; members who voted against it said that the board is overreaching on the decision of what material is appropriate for children.
“We could have 226 people in 226 communities coming to us because they disagree with local decisions,” said Ron Snider, a board member who voted against the code change. However, board chairman John Wahl said the code change is meant to put parents in control of what their children are reading. “The goal here is that we don’t want innocent children to accidentally stumble upon sexually explicit content or sexual content that the parent may want to have input of when they’re reading about it,” said Wahl. Wahl said the code change will not take effect until, at its earliest, spring 2026. Wahl is also the head of Alabama’s Republican Party.Auburn business owner killed in school bus crash remembered for ‘servant’s heart’Grizzly bear attacks schoolchildren and teachers on walking trail, injuring 11 Mother alleges daughter was placed in isolation room at Elmore County therapeutic school; district reviewing complaint
