The contract, awarded by the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC), was scrutinized by the Legislature's contract review committee on Thursday due to Lunsford's connection to the AI incident that led to a reprimand from a federal judge.
\Representative Chris England, a Democrat from Tuscaloosa, questioned the contract's rationale, emphasizing that the state spends a significant amount of taxpayer money on private lawyers for litigation that seems to drag on indefinitely. England expressed concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding the ADOC's legal spending, stating that he couldn't account for the outcomes or deliverables of the ongoing cases. He also raised ethical questions about using AI in court, particularly considering Lunsford's role in a case where ChatGPT fabricated citations in a legal document. \Lunsford, who was part of the Butler Snow law firm, along with two other lawyers, was removed from a federal case by U.S. District Judge Anna Manasco due to the improper use of ChatGPT. The committee acknowledged that while Lunsford was sanctioned, his involvement in the AI incident was less significant than the lawyer who was primarily responsible. However, the committee expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of clarity regarding the ADOC's legal strategy and the potential cost to taxpayers if the ongoing cases remain unresolved
