The Alabama House of Representatives approved legislation aimed at streamlining pathways for students to enter the workforce without a bachelor's degree and attracting career tech teachers from other states. The bills include tax credits for employers who loan employees to educational institutions and expedited processes for teacher certification.
) - Alabama ’s House of Representatives passed a pair of bills Thursday that are looking to make it easier for students to get jobs that do not require a bachelor’s degree.“The monies that we’re putting in that direction are gonna pay dividends for the state of Alabama ,” said Majority Whip James Lomax , the sponsor of House Bill 517.
HB 517 gives tax credits to employers that temporarily loan their employees to eligible community colleges and public high schools.House Bill 520 creates a quicker pathway for existing teachers in other states to move to Alabama and become career tech teachers. “We want to make sure we have the workforce that is gonna align with that the for the future and making sure that we’re taking care of the children and their opportunities as they come into the workforce,” said Rep. Lomax. According to House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter , the legislation was created after getting input from industry leaders. “We’re trying to train kids to go into the fields that they have but we’ve never sat down and talked to them until this package of bills, so it’s changed the dialogue a little bit, rightfully so, because they know what they need and we can’t keep doing the same thing that we’ve always done,” said Speaker Ledbetter. There are 10 working days left in the 2026 legislative session to get both bills passed in the Senate an on to Gov.
