) - The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued an alert after confirming that a dog in Andalusia tested positive for rabies Monday. According to ADPH , a veterinarian who suspected the dog was rabid sent it to Auburn for testing.
The dog was then taken to the ADPH Bureau of Clinical Laboratories in Prattville where it was confirmed to be infected. State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Dee W. Jones issued a statement Monday reminding pet owners to properly vaccinate their animals against rabies. “It’s not unusual to see clusters of rabies cases in wild animals and strays during this time of year,” he said. ADPH says it is very common for pets to come into contact with a wild rabid animal, which increases its chances of contracting rabies. Dogs, cats and ferrets at least 12 weeks old are required by Alabama law to be up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. In addition to vaccines, pet owners should follow these steps to prevent possible exposure:Do not leave uneaten pet food or scraps near your residence.Do not go near wildlife or domestic animals that are acting strange or unusual. For more information about rabies and prevention, you can contact ADPH at 334-206-5969.Alabama Court of Appeals affirms death sentence for man convicted of killing 5-year-oldFuneral arrangements announced for University of Alabama student Jimmy Gracey
