Howard Koplowitz, al.com The Alabama Republican Party Executive Committee set the rules for qualifying to appear on the ballot for the 2026 primary elections Saturday during the party’s Summer Meeting in Montgomery .

Candidates will be competing next year to be the party’s nominees in races ranging from governor and U.S. House and U.S. Senate seats to the state Legislature, county positions, judgeships and other offices.Candidates for offices other than county positions will have from Jan. 5, 2026 through Jan. 23, 2026 to file a declaration of candidacy with Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl. People are also reading… County candidates will have the same timeframe to file declaration of candidacies with the chairman of their county’s executive committee. Under the declaration, candidates will have to certify that they have the constitutional qualifications to hold the offices they seek. They will also have to attest that they haven’t committed a felony, aren’t disqualified from registering to vote or voting and that they are “a Republican and I endorse and will actively support the principles and policies of the Republican Party.” A “candidate committee” comprised of voting members of the executive committee’s Steering Committee will review the declarations of candidacy “to determine if the candidate meets the qualifications prescribed” and direct Wahl “not to certify a candidate which the Candidate Committee finds does not meet such qualifications.” Under an amendment to the party’s bylaws that was also passed Saturday, the party “shall deny ballot access to any partisan elected official who qualifies with the state or local Republican Party but is not officially recognized as a Republican. The bylaws, which identify such officials as those “who are Independents, or members of a political party other than a Republican who wish to qualify to run as a Republican ...,” must adhere to the party switching procedure in the party’s standing rules “and must complete the appropriate procedure before qualifying for any given election cycle in order to be granted ballot access.” The candidate committee will also have the power to fill vacancies created by “death, resignation, disqualification, revocation or otherwise.” A resolution setting the terms for qualifying passed the executive committee by a voice vote Saturday during the party’s Summer Meeting at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel. Candidates will also have to pay qualifying fees to the party’s Executive Committee equal to 2% of the salary for the office they are seeking. The Alabama Democratic Party does not appear to have set its qualifying rules yet. A party spokeswoman could not immediately be reached for comment.
