According to State Forester Rick Oates, 50 wildfires were reported across the state this weekend which burned more the 2,300 acres of forestland.
- The Alabama Forestry Commission announced a statewide Fire Alert Monday due to ongoing drought conditions, low humidity, and an increasing risk for wildfires.
According to State Forester Rick Oates, 50 wildfires were reported across the state this weekend which burned more the 2,300 acres of forestland in Mobile, Coosa, Escambia, Washington and Choctaw Counties.
Oates said that with no rain in sight, the continued dry conditions will create the potential for dangerous wildfire behavior. “These conditions create the potential for fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer and more of the agency’s firefighting resources to contain,” he said. “Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.”
The Fire Alert is expected to remain in effect at least through Monday, April 20, or until the State Forester rescinds it.The Commission said anyone who burns a field, grassland or woodland without a permit could face criminal charges.Montgomery police address community following multiple weekend shootings
