Ryan Williams is a finalist for an award honoring college football's top freshman.
could end with an accolade named for a former Crimson Tide player. Williams is a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Award, which goes to the nation’s top freshman, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Wednesday.
Williams would become the third Alabama player to win the award, which began in 2018. Former Crimson Tide safety Caleb Downs, who transferred to Ohio State this past offseason after Nick Saban retired, won last year.Williams was one of five finalists for this year’s award. He was joined by Minnesota safety Koi Perich, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, South Carolina edge Dylan Stewart and Texas edge Colin Simmons.
“Congratulations to this year’s Shaun Alexander Award Top 5 Finalists,” Alexander said in the press release announcing the group. “I’ve enjoyed watching this year’s top 5 impact college football as they have put on some of the best collegiate performances I’ve seen this season. I’m confident these guys will continue to perform at an elite level for years to come. Good luck to the winner!”
Williams has become one of the Crimson Tide’s top offensive performers this year, running up 857 receiving yards with eight touchdowns throughout the regular season. He caught 45 passes throughout the 12-game campaign, and can add on to his stats during the postseason.
