Even as the weather clears and conditions improve, some roadways may still be unsafe to travel on.

) - The Alabama Department of Transportation is taking action ahead of time to be as prepared for upcoming winter weather as possible.

“ALDOT crews have been out pretreating today, our interstates and our major U.S. routes and state routes, just based on that traffic volume,” said ALDOT spokeswoman Brantley Kirk. The weather threat could create extra obstacles for drivers, many of whom are unaccustomed to driving in the snow, especially in the southern part of the state. ALDOT wants people to know they are up for the challenge.

“We’ve been able to send crews up north when they need them and they help send crews down south when we need it,” Kirk said. “We do use other types of equipment. We may not have plows, but we can use motor graders to help move snow out of the way. So we do use the resources that we have available.”“Still monitor those bridges and overpasses because black ice, it’s invisible ice and it’s kind of a scary thing if you’re kind of going over that,” Kirk said.Gov.
