DOTHAN, Ala. - The execution of a man convicted of raping and murdering a Dothan nurse may be more uncertain than ever after a series of court rulings in a separate Alabama death penalty case.
Those rulings — including one issued Thursday by the U.S. Supreme Court — spared the life of death row inmate Jeffrey Lee. The high court let stand a lower court decision that Alabama’s use of nitrogen gas for an execution is unconstitutionally cruel, even though the Department of Corrections has carried out other executions using that method.
Like Lee, Alabama death row inmate Artez Hammonds selected nitrogen gas during a state-provided window that allowed some inmates to choose their method of execution. Hammonds has not been given an execution date in the 1990 killing of Marylin Mitchell, who had moved into a Chapelwood neighborhood townhome just days before her death. As of June 2026, Artez Hammonds has not been given an execution date in the 1990 killing of Marylin Mitchell.
It remains unclear how the rulings in Lee’s case could affect Hammonds’ case — and whether they could delay or alter Hammonds’ execution plans. No execution date is currently set.
