The contest features Republican Caroleene Dobson against Democrat Shomari Figures. The two will face off in a debate at noon Thursday on AL.com.
Republican Caroleene Dobson of Montgomery faces Democrat Shomari Figures of Mobile in the 2nd congressional district race during the Nov. 5, 2024, general election.Alabama has had few instances in recent years in which one of its seven congressional seats was considered competitive enough before a General Election to warrant a structured debate.
But the 2nd district is competitive again, thanks to a lengthy redistricting process that gives Black voters an opportunity to elect a candidate of their choosing. Aside from the presidential contest, the 2nd district, which includes Montgomery and Mobile, is the most competitive race on the Nov. 5 Alabama ballot.
“I think debates, on balance, are good for voters,” said Jess Brown, a retired political science professor at Athens State University and a longtime observer of Alabama state politics. “Whether the voters take enough time and interest in utilizing them is a whole other question. But I do think the press should make an effort, an aggressive effort, particularly for the higher profile offices to get the candidates in the same place and ask them the same questions and see how they respond.
“We look forward to a substantive discussion of the issues during the District 2 candidate debate,” AARP said in a statement. Both Dobson and Figures are political newcomers. Dobson is a real estate attorney from Montgomery, joining Maynard Nexsen in 2019. Before then, she worked and lived in Texas, practicing law in San Antonio. Figures, before entering the congressional race, was deputy chief of staff and counselor to Attorney general Merrick Garland in the Department of Justice.
